On Wednesday, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu declared a national security emergency, announcing major steps to quickly strengthen Nigeria’s strained security agencies in response to growing threats nationwide.
The State House announced that the President has instructed the Nigeria Police Force to recruit 20,000 more officers, raising the total number of approved recruits since 2023 to 50,000. This latest hiring push aims to bolster police manpower, which experts have long considered insufficient to meet the country’s population and security needs.
As part of the emergency directives, President Tinubu granted security agencies temporary authority to convert National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) camps into short-term police training facilities, enabling a quicker intake, training, and deployment process. The measure aims to close the manpower gap more swiftly and enhance response capabilities nationwide.
The Presidency stated that the decision shows Tinubu’s strong dedication to boosting Nigeria’s internal security, especially as the nation continues to face challenges like banditry, kidnapping, terrorism, and communal clashes.
Government officials noted that the expanded recruitment, alongside ongoing reforms in defence and intelligence agencies, is designed to improve coordination, enhance community policing efforts, and restore public confidence in law enforcement.
The emergency declaration comes amid growing public concern over persistent insecurity and follows recent high-level security briefings between the President and service chiefs.
